Free Palestine Maastricht is organizing an event on Decolonzing the Mind at the University of Maastricht from 18.15-20.15 hr. Renowned author, historian and anti-colonial activist Sandew Hira will be joining us in Maastricht on Wednesday 8th February for a talk and discussion titled ‘Is knowledge production in The West inherently colonial?’. Copies of his book published earlier this month, ‘Decolonising The Mind’, will be available for signing.
Taking ideas and examples from both history and the modern world, Sandew will dive into the conscious and subconscious strings that pull on the way knowledge is produced. How do we view “the European enlightenment” period of history? How did the colonization of science result in the production of concepts and methodologies that blocks the understanding of the world we live in. Hira goes into the fundaments of European philosopy, and important disciplines such as economic, social, political and cultural theory, a theory of world history (has history come to an end as Fukuyama argues?). He even discusses how to decolonize mathematics. His arguments are put in a theoretical framework that explains how racism became embedded in basis concepts of Eurocentric knowledge production.
